Protective Effects Of Tualang Honey On Bone Structure In Experimental Postmenopausal Rats.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Tualang honey on trabecular structure and compare these effects with those of calcium supplementation in ovariectomized rats.

Forty female, Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups (n =8): four controls and one test arm. The control arm comprised a baseline control, sham-operated control, ovariectomized control, and ovariectomized calcium-treated rats (receiving 1% calcium in drinking water ad libitum). The test arm was composed of ovariectomized, Tualang honey-treated rats (received 0.2 g/kg body weight of Tualang honey). Both the sham-operated control and ovariectomized control groups received vehicle treatment (deionized water), and the baseline control group was sacrificed without treatment.

All rats were orally gavaged daily for six weeks after day one post-surgery. The bone structural analysis of rats in the test arm group showed a significant increase in the bone volume per tissue volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and trabecular number (Tb.N) and a significant decrease in inter-trabecular space (Tb.Sp) compared with the ovariectomized control group. The trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) in the test arm group was significantly higher compared with the ovariectomized-calcium treated group, and the inter-trabecular space (Tb.Sp) in the test arm group was significantly narrower compared with the ovariectomized-calcium treated group.
In conclusion, ovariectomized rats that received Tualang honey showed more improvements in trabecular bone structure than the rats that received calcium.

Tualang Honey Benefits Bones

Tualang honey benefits come from bees that nest high in the tualang tree, a very tall tree found in the jungles of South East Asia. These bees collect pollen and nectar from various wild flowers in the area and many think this is the reason why this honey has been shown to have so many beneficial effects.
NOTE: This honey is also known as Koompasia excelsa or Semerak honey.

Scientific studies concerning its effect on bone.

1.A study at the Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil published in November of 2012 concluded that tualang honey built trabecular bone in laboratory rats better than supplemental calcium. 

2. There are also studies with  postmenopausal women that showed positive effects of this honey on bone density.

A. One  was done by H. Lily, N. H. Nik Hazlina, S. Siti Amrah, et al.,and it was published in  Proceedings of the 2nd International

 Conference on the Medicinal Use of Honey, vol. 2 of  Journal of ApiProduct and ApiMedical Science, no. 1, pp. 31–60, Kota Bharu, Malaysia, 2010. Ths study reported  ” that daily intake of Tualang honey at 20 mg/day for four months was found to be safe and
exerted the same effect on bone densitometry when compared to hormone replacement therapy.”

 B. A later study (2012) was published in Evidence Based Complementary Alternative Medicine, “The Effects of Tualang Honey on Bone  Metabolism of Postmenopausal Women” by Nadia Mohd Effendy, Norazlina Mohamed, Isa Naina Mohamad and Ahmad Nazrun Shuid.

The ABSTRACT of this study states:  

“Osteoporosis which is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration with a consequent increase in bone fragility can be associated with various stimuli such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Postmenopausal women are more prone to osteoporosis  due to reduction in estrogen which may further  lead to elevation of oxidative stress and lipid accumulation which will promote osteoblasts apoptosis. Proinflammatory cytokines are elevated following estrogen deficiency. These cytokines are important  determinants of osteoclasts differentiation and its bone resorption activity. The main treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis is estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Despite its effectiveness, ERT, however, can cause many adverse effects. Therefore, alternative  treatment that is rich in antioxidant and can exert an anti-inflammatory effect can be given to replace the conventional ERT.

Tualang honey is one of the best options available as it contains antioxidant as well as exerting anti-inflammatory effect which can act as a free radical scavenger, reducing the oxidative stress level as well as inhibiting proinflammatory cytokine. This will result in survival of osteoblasts, reduced osteoclastogenic activity, and consequently, reduce bone loss. Hence, Tualang honey can be used as an alternative treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis with minimal side effects.

Tualang honey is effective in the treatment of osteoporosis in menopausal women, putting it on par with modern medicine, says a Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) study.

Its Deputy Dean (Research Division) School of Medical Science, Prof Dr Rosline Hassan said the finding was the result of research since 2006 on a group of women aged 45 years and above.

“We made a comparison between women who are given 20 grammes of Tualang honey daily for four months with women given modern medicine. The study found that Tualang honey has the same effects as modern medicine in terms of bone density,” she told Bernama on the sidelines of the Natural Product Research in Health colloquium at USM campus, Kubang Kerian.

“Similar studies conducted on smokers found that their toxicity level dropped after taking 20 grammes of Tualang honey daily for three months.

“Scientific proof shows that natural products have their own advantages”
